About Kathrine Switzer
Kathrine Virginia Switzer, born January 5, 1947, is an American marathon runner, author, and television commentator. She is known for becoming the first woman to run the Boston Marathon as an officially registered competitor in 1967. Running under the name K.V. Switzer, she entered the race alongside her trainer Arnie Briggs and her boyfriend Thomas Miller. During her run, race manager Jock Semple attempted to forcibly remove her by grabbing her bib number, and when Briggs intervened, he was knocked down. Miller then pushed Semple to the ground to protect Switzer, allowing her to complete the race. The incident was captured in photographs and reported internationally. Her participation prompted a response from the Amateur Athletic Union, which banned women from competing against men, although women had not previously been explicitly prohibited. In 1972, women were officially allowed to run the Boston Marathon, and Switzer finished third in that race. She was presented with a trophy by Semple, acknowledging her achievement and role in advancing women's participation in marathon running.
