Karl Marx

Karl Marx was a German philosopher, social and political theorist, economist, journalist, and revolutionary socialist. Born in Trier in 1818, he earned a doctoral degree in philosophy from the University of Jena in 1841 and became involved in radical journalism. Influenced by Hegelian philosophy and the Young Hegelians, he critiqued these ideas in works such as The German Ideology. In Paris, Marx met Friedrich Engels, his lifelong collaborator, and together they authored The Communist Manifesto in 1848, which outlined a program for revolution. After being expelled from Germany following the Revolutions of 1848, Marx relocated to London. There, he wrote his Grundrisse notebooks and the three volumes of Das Kapital. He was also an active figure in the International Workingmen's Association, where he opposed anarchist influences and celebrated the Paris Commune of 1871. In his later years, Marx developed theories about the transition to communism, including critiques of societal development rooted in class conflict. His ideas, collectively known as Marxism, analyze capitalism's internal contradictions and predict its eventual overthrow by the proletariat, leading to a classless and stateless society. Marx's work has exerted profound influence on socialist thought, political movements, and modern sociology, inspiring revolutions and shaping political discourse throughout the 20th century. He died in 1883 and was buried in Highgate Cemetery. His analysis of class struggle and economic development continues to be a central reference in discussions of socio-economic systems.
