Karen Anne Carpenter was an American musician and vocalist, born on March 2, 1950, in New Haven, Connecticut. She was best known as the lead vocalist and drummer of the duo the Carpenters, which she formed with her older brother Richard. The group achieved significant commercial and critical success throughout the 1970s after being signed to A&M Records in 1969. Carpenter was recognized for her distinctive three-octave contralto vocal range and was praised by her peers for her singing abilities. Initially, she played drums full-time for the band, but over time she transitioned into the role of frontwoman, performing as the group's primary vocalist. Carpenter’s musical talent earned her a place on Rolling Stone's 2010 list of the 100 greatest singers of all time. In addition to her musical career, she was involved in the Long Beach State choir during college and studied drums in high school. In 1975, Carpenter began experiencing symptoms of anorexia nervosa, a condition linked to the pressures of fame and challenging family dynamics. Her struggle with the disorder was severe and ultimately contributed to her death at the age of 32 on February 4, 1983, from complications related to anorexia.
