Karen Black was an American actress, screenwriter, singer, and songwriter with a career spanning over 50 years. She was born as Karen Blanche Ziegler on July 1, 1939, in suburban Chicago. Black studied theater at Northwestern University before leaving to pursue acting in New York City. She performed on Broadway and made her film debut in 1966. Her early film career included a notable role in Francis Ford Coppola's You're a Big Boy Now. Black gained prominence with her performances in studio and independent films during the 1970s, often portraying eccentric characters, and became a recognized figure of New Hollywood. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Five Easy Pieces and received two Golden Globe Awards for her performances in films such as Airport 1975 and The Great Gatsby. Throughout her career, Black appeared in a variety of prominent films, including Nashville, The Day of the Locust, and multiple horror films like Trilogy of Terror and Burnt Offerings. She also played roles on stage, notably in the Broadway production of Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. In the 1990s and 2000s, she continued to act in independent and horror films, and she wrote her own screenplays. Black's work in Rob Zombie's House of 1000 Corpses established her as a cult horror icon. She passed away from ampullary cancer in 2013.
