Julia Morgan (January 20, 1872 – February 2, 1957) was an American architect and engineer known for designing over 700 buildings in California. She is recognized for her work on Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California. Morgan was a trailblazer as the first woman admitted to the architecture program at l'École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and also the first female architect licensed in California. Throughout her career, she designed many structures for institutions serving women and girls, including buildings for the Young Women's Christian Association and Mills College. Morgan was noted for pioneering the aesthetic use of reinforced concrete in her architecture, a material that demonstrated superior seismic performance during the earthquakes of 1906 and 1989. Her design philosophy reflected an embrace of the Arts and Crafts Movement, integrating California pottery and blending classical and Craftsman elements, scholarship and innovation, formalism and whimsy. Morgan's work sought to reconcile these diverse aspects, resulting in distinctive and enduring structures. Her contributions to architecture were recognized posthumously when she received the American Institute of Architects' highest award, the AIA Gold Medal, in 2014.
