Jonathan Allen Lethem is an American novelist, essayist, and short story writer born on February 19, 1964. His debut novel, Gun, with Occasional Music, was published in 1994; it is a genre-blending work that combines elements of science fiction and detective fiction. Lethem gained significant recognition in 1999 with the publication of Motherless Brooklyn, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award and marked a milestone in his career. He continued to achieve mainstream success with The Fortress of Solitude, published in 2003, which became a New York Times Best Seller. Lethem received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2005, an award that recognizes exceptional creativity and contributions to the arts.
