John Wesley Powell: podcast appearances and interviews

John Wesley Powell (March 24, 1834 – September 23, 1902) was an American geologist, explorer, ethnologist, and university professor. He is renowned for his 1869 expedition that involved a three-month river trip down the Green and Colorado rivers, including the first official United States government-sponsored passage through the Grand Canyon. Powell's contributions to geology and exploration extended beyond this expedition; he served as the second director of the United States Geological Survey from 1881 to 1894, appointed by President James A. Garfield. During his tenure, he proposed policies for the development of the arid Western United States, demonstrating a prescient understanding of regional conditions and resource management. Before that, Powell was appointed the first director of the Bureau of Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution, where he supported research in linguistics and sociology and authored an influential classification of North American Indian languages. He also served as the first president of the Anthropological Society of Washington. Powell conducted extensive interactions with Native peoples of the Colorado Plateau and held views consistent with the progressionist theories of Lewis H. Morgan, considering Native Americans as culturally savage or barbarian. He advocated for the replacement of indigenous hunting practices with sedentary agriculture and promoted the cultural assimilation of Native populations. Between 1894 and 1899, Powell was a lecturer at Columbian University, focusing on the history of culture within political science. His scholarly and exploration efforts also earned him membership in the American Antiquarian Society in 1898.
