John Tavares, born on September 20, 1990, is a Canadian professional ice hockey player affiliated with the Buffalo Bandits. He is known for his significant contributions to the sport as a forward and an alternate captain. Tavares's early career included competing at the major junior level in the Ontario Hockey League with the Oshawa Generals before being traded to the London Knights at the 2009 OHL trading deadline. He gained exceptional player status at the age of 14, enabling him to join the OHL as an underage player, and was named the Canadian Hockey League Rookie of the Year in 2006 and the Player of the Year in 2007. Throughout his Major Junior career, he finished with the most goals in the league, totaling 215, and ranked sixth in points with 433. Tavares was highly regarded as a top prospect heading into the 2009 NHL Draft, where he was selected first overall by the New York Islanders. He played for the Islanders for nine seasons, serving as captain for five, and later captained the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2019 through 2024. Internationally, Tavares represented Canada in multiple competitions, including winning gold medals at the 2008 and 2009 World Junior Championships, where he was named the tournament's most valuable player in 2009.
