About John Sherman
John Sherman was an American politician from Ohio who served in federal office throughout the Civil War and into the late nineteenth century. A member of the Republican Party, he served in both houses of the United States Congress and held significant positions including Secretary of the Treasury and Secretary of State. Sherman was a senator for nearly 32 years, making him the longest-serving senator from Ohio, and was involved in shaping financial legislation during and after the Civil War. He contributed to the redesign of the United States monetary system, helped restore the nation's credit, and promoted a stable, gold-backed currency. Sherman also served as chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee and was influential in legislation related to immigration, business competition, and interstate commerce. He was the principal author of the Sherman Antitrust Act, which was enacted in 1890. Sherman sought the Republican presidential nomination three times, with his closest attempt in 1888, but he was never nominated. In 1897, he was appointed Secretary of State by President William McKinley, a role he held until health issues impeded his performance, leading to his retirement in 1898. Sherman was born in Lancaster, Ohio, and later moved to Mansfield, Ohio, where he began his career as a lawyer. He was the younger brother of Union General William Tecumseh Sherman. He passed away at his home in Washington, D.C., in 1900 at age 77.
