John Paul Jones, born John Paul on July 6, 1747, was a naval officer who served in the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War. Often regarded as the 'Father of the American Navy,' he is considered one of the greatest naval commanders in United States military history. Jones became a sailor at age 13 and served aboard various merchant ships, including slave ships. After killing a mutinous subordinate, he fled to Virginia to avoid arrest and joined the newly established Continental Navy around 1775. During the war with Great Britain, Jones participated in numerous naval engagements against the Royal Navy, leading campaigns in the Irish and North Seas that targeted British naval and merchant shipping. His notable actions included raiding the town of Whitehaven, winning the North Channel Naval Duel, and fighting the Battle of Flamborough Head, which earned him international recognition. Following his naval career in America, Jones joined the Imperial Russian Navy and attained the rank of rear admiral. However, he was compelled to leave the Russian navy after being accused of a crime. A Freemason, Jones maintained friendships with influential U.S. political figures such as John Hancock, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin.
