John Michael O'Keefe, born on November 18, 1939, is an American-British neuroscientist, psychologist, and professor at University College London. He is renowned for discovering place cells in the hippocampus, which are neurons involved in spatial navigation and memory. His research demonstrated that these neurons exhibit a specific form of temporal coding known as theta phase precession. O'Keefe's work has significantly advanced the understanding of how the brain encodes and processes spatial information. In recognition of his contributions to neuroscience, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2014, sharing the honor with May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser.
