John Marsh: podcast appearances and interviews

John Marsh (June 5, 1799 – September 24, 1856) was a medical doctor, ranchero, and linguist active in California during its period as part of the Republic of Mexico. Born in Massachusetts, he immigrated to California in 1836 and became a Mexican citizen by baptism into the Roman Catholic Church, a step taken to facilitate land acquisition. Marsh acquired the expansive land grant of Rancho Los Méganos in Contra Costa and developed considerable wealth as a rancher. He played a significant role among influential figures working towards California's admission as a U.S. state after the region's transition following the Mexican-American War. Marsh was multilingual, fluent in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. While serving as a U.S. Indian agent at Fort Snelling, he was the first to compile a dictionary of the Sioux language. His legacy includes geographic features such as Marsh Creek and Marsh Creek State Park in Contra Costa County. The John Marsh Historic Trust was established to preserve his contributions and memory.
