John Richard Kasich Jr. is an American politician and author who served as the 69th governor of Ohio from 2011 to 2019. A member of the Republican Party, he previously served nine terms in the United States House of Representatives representing Ohio's 12th congressional district. During his time in Congress, Kasich was a member of the House Armed Services Committee for 18 years and served six years as chair of the House Budget Committee. He played a significant role in the passage of welfare reform legislation in 1996 and the Balanced Budget Act of 1997. Kasich has also been a candidate for the presidential nomination in 2000 and 2016, running in the Republican primaries in both years. He was elected governor of Ohio in 2010, defeating incumbent Ted Strickland, and was re-elected in 2014, defeating Ed FitzGerald. After his tenure as governor, Kasich ran for president again in 2016, finishing fourth in the Republican primaries and winning the primary in Ohio. He did not support Donald Trump in the 2016 election and chose not to attend the Republican National Convention that year. Following his political career, Kasich was a CNN contributor from 2019 to 2023 and has been an analyst on NBC News since then. He is known for being one of Donald Trump’s prominent critics within the Republican Party and endorsed Joe Biden for president in 2020.
