John Ray Grisham Jr. is an American writer, lawyer, and former politician renowned for his legal thrillers. Born on February 8, 1955, Grisham graduated from Mississippi State University and obtained a Juris Doctor from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1981. He practiced criminal law for approximately ten years and served in the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1983 to 1990. Grisham began writing in 1985, and his first novel, A Time to Kill, was published in 1989. This debut was followed by a series of bestsellers, including The Firm, which sold more than seven million copies and was adapted into a feature film in 1993 starring Tom Cruise. His books have achieved significant commercial success, with 37 consecutive number-one fiction bestsellers according to the American Academy of Achievement, and sales reaching 300 million copies worldwide. Grisham is one of only three authors who have sold two million copies on the first printing, alongside Tom Clancy and J. K. Rowling.
