John Clarke, born on 10 February 1942, is a British experimental physicist and Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. He is recognized for his work on measurement devices based on superconductivity. His contributions have been influential in the field of superconducting electronics, earning him the nickname of 'the godfather of superconducting electronics' from Steven Girvin. During the 1980s, Clarke led a research team that included notable scientists such as John M. Martinis and Michel Devoret. Their research into macroscopic quantum phenomena using the Josephson effect was groundbreaking and contributed significantly to the understanding of quantum physics. Their discoveries culminated in the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2025.
