Joel Smith, born on 3 May 1977, is a children's and family minister associated with Just Fly Sports. His background includes a career as an Australian rules footballer. Smith began his football career in 1995 with St Kilda and was part of the team that secured the club's first AFL Cup victory in 1996. He played three promising years before suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury late in the 1997 season, which required reconstruction and caused him to miss the finals. Due to a contractual dispute, Smith transferred to Hawthorn at the end of 1997. Although he was injured throughout 1998 and did not play during that season, the club retained him, recognizing his talent. He returned to play in 1999 as a running half-back, a role in which he excelled at setting up attacking plays. Throughout his career, Smith was successful in this position and achieved notable accolades, including selection to the All-Australian team in 2001 and 2003. He also received the Peter Crimmins Medal in 2001 and served as vice captain in 2005. Recognized consistently among the club's best players, he retired at the end of the 2007 season, during which Hawthorn reached the finals after a six-year absence.
