Joseph William Namath, born May 31, 1943, is an American former professional football quarterback recognized as an NFL legend. He played for thirteen seasons, primarily with the New York Jets, across the American Football League and the National Football League. Known as Broadway Joe, he played college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide, earning first-team All-SEC honors and winning the national championship in 1964. Selected first overall by the Jets in the 1965 AFL draft, Namath established a prolific career. During his five AFL seasons, he was a two-time Most Valuable Player and led the league in passing yards twice. He secured one AFL championship and one Super Bowl victory with the Jets, with both titles remaining the franchise's only championships. Following the AFL–NFL merger, he continued to play with the Jets for seven more seasons and spent his final year with the Los Angeles Rams. Namath's legacy was cemented in 1969 when he guaranteed victory for the Jets in Super Bowl III, leading them to a historic upset over the Baltimore Colts. This victory, which earned him Super Bowl MVP honors, was significant as it demonstrated the strength of AFL teams entering the combined league and was the first for an AFL franchise. He is notable for being the first quarterback to win both a college national championship and a major professional championship. Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985, Namath remains a prominent figure in American football history.
