Joan Chandos Baez is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and activist born on January 9, 1941. She has performed publicly for over 60 years and has released more than 30 albums. Her music is primarily classified as folk but has expanded to include genres such as folk rock, pop, country, and gospel. Baez began her recording career in 1960 with immediate success, with her first three albums achieving gold record status. Although she is a songwriter, she is also known for interpreting others' works, recording songs by artists like the Allman Brothers Band, the Beatles, Jackson Browne, Leonard Cohen, Woody Guthrie, and many others. She played a significant role in popularizing the early work of Bob Dylan, being one of the first major artists to record his songs in the early 1960s, and helped bring his songwriting to a broader audience. Baez's repertoire includes notable songs such as "Diamonds & Rust" and covers of influential tracks like Phil Ochs's "There but for Fortune" and The Band's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." Her performance at the 1969 Woodstock Festival stands out as a significant moment in her career. Throughout her life, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to political and social activism, focusing on issues such as nonviolence, civil rights, human rights, and environmental concerns.
