Jimmy Lai is a Hong Kong businessman, politician, and advocate for democracy and human rights. He is the founder of the clothing retailer Giordano, the media company Next Digital, and the newspaper Apple Daily. Lai has contributed significantly to Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement, particularly supporting the Democratic Party. Since becoming a British citizen in 1994, he has been a prominent critic of the Chinese Communist Party and a vocal supporter of press freedom in Hong Kong. Under his leadership, Apple Daily was recognized for its openness in criticizing the Chinese government and became the territory's most popular pro-democracy publication. Lai has faced various acts of intimidation, including assaults and petrol bomb attacks, reflecting the tensions surrounding his activism. His efforts to promote democracy have led to his arrest under Hong Kong's national security law in August 2020. As of September 2025, Lai remains imprisoned in solitary confinement at Hong Kong's Stanley Prison, which he requested for personal reasons.
