James Enos Clyburn, born on July 21, 1940, is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for South Carolina's 6th congressional district. First elected in 1992, he is serving his 17th term, representing a district that includes most of the majority-black precincts in and around Columbia and Charleston, as well as in areas outside Beaufort and nearly all of South Carolina's share of the Black Belt. Clyburn has held significant leadership roles within the Democratic Party in the House of Representatives, including serving as the third-ranking House Democrat from 2007 until 2023. He has been the majority whip during two periods, from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023, and has also served as assistant Democratic leader during 2011 to 2019 and from 2023 onwards. Following the 2018 midterm elections, Clyburn was re-elected as majority whip at the beginning of the 116th Congress. After Republicans gained control of the House in the 2022 midterm elections and Nancy Pelosi retired, Clyburn successfully campaigned for the position of House assistant Democratic leader. He played a notable role in the 2020 presidential election by endorsing Joe Biden three days before the South Carolina Democratic primary, a move that helped transform Biden’s campaign and contributed to his eventual nomination and election as President.
