Jerome John Garcia, born on August 1, 1942, was an influential American musician best known as the lead guitarist and vocalist of the rock band Grateful Dead. He co-founded the band in 1965 and was a key figure throughout its 30-year career. Despite disavowing leadership roles, Garcia was widely regarded as the band's leader and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 as a member of the Grateful Dead. He also founded and contributed to numerous side projects, including the Saunders–Garcia Band, the Jerry Garcia Band, Old & In the Way, and New Riders of the Purple Sage, among others. Throughout his career, Garcia released solo albums and contributed as a session musician on various recordings. Known for his distinctive guitar playing and improvisational skill, Garcia was ranked among the greatest guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine, holding rankings in 2003, 2015, and 2023. His improvisational style, rooted in the days of the Acid Tests, emphasized spontaneous musical exploration as a way of reducing stress and making real-time decisions. Garcia's musical approach allowed him to play a variety of instruments and engage in long improvisations that became a hallmark of his performances. Later in life, Garcia faced health challenges related to diabetes, obesity, smoking, and substance addiction. He experienced a diabetic coma in 1986 and ultimately died of a heart attack in August 1995 while in a California drug rehabilitation facility.
