Jeffrey Clyde Hayes, born on August 19, 1959, is an American former professional football player who served as a punter in the National Football League. His career included playing for the Washington Redskins, Cincinnati Bengals, and Miami Dolphins. During his time in the NFL, Hayes made 274 punts, accumulating a total of 10,471 yards with an average of 38.2 yards per punt and his longest punt being 59 yards in a 1984 game. He is notable for scoring a touchdown on a 61-yard run while playing for the Bengals against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1986, which is recognized as the longest touchdown run for a kicker or punter until 2010. In addition to punting, Hayes occasionally carried the ball, with four rushing attempts for the Redskins including a 24-yard run in 1984, following a 48-yard run in 1983. He ended his career with 168 rushing yards from seven attempts. Hayes played college football at the University of North Carolina, representing the Tar Heels. His athletic achievements include participating in two Super Bowls with the Redskins, Super Bowl XVII and XVIII.
