Jean-Claude Camille François Van Varenberg, known professionally as Jean-Claude Van Damme, is a Belgian martial artist and actor born in Brussels. Enrolled in a Shotokan karate school at age ten by his father, he achieved the rank of 2nd Dan in karate and competed in numerous karate and kickboxing competitions. As a teenager, Van Damme won the middleweight championship of the European Professional Karate Association in 1979 and the Mr. Belgium bodybuilding title in 1978. He moved to the United States in 1982 with ambitions of becoming a Hollywood actor. After working on several films, he gained prominence with his leading role in the martial arts film Bloodsport in 1988. This launch established him as a popular action star, with successful films such as Cyborg, Kickboxer, Lionheart, Death Warrant, Double Impact, Universal Soldier, and others throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. During this period, he attained sex symbol status and collaborated with notable Hong Kong filmmakers like John Woo, Tsui Hark, and Ringo Lam. Following a decline in popularity at the turn of the century, Van Damme experienced a career resurgence with his critically acclaimed portrayal of a fictionalized version of himself in JCVD in 2008. He returned to action roles with appearances like The Expendables 2 in 2012 and continued working in film and voice roles, including Minions: The Rise of Gru and Darkness of Man. His work has grossed over 3.3 billion dollars worldwide, establishing him as one of the most successful action stars of all time.
