Janet Taylor, born Jane Ann Ionn on 13 May 1804, was an English scientist specializing in astronomy, navigation, mathematics, and meteorology. She founded the George Taylor Nautical Academy, which gained recognition from notable institutions such as the East India Company, Trinity House, and the Admiralty. Taylor authored several works related to astronomy and navigation and owned a business involved in the production and repair of navigational instruments. Her contributions extended to developing methods for calculating latitude from altitude, which were considered highly clever at the time. Taylor was among the few women working as a designer of scientific instruments in 19th century London. In 1834, she patented a device known as the Mariner's Calculator; although initially dismissed by the Admiralty, it was later appreciated for its ingenuity despite being seen as impractical for the intended users. Throughout her career, Taylor received medals from both the King of Prussia and the King of the Netherlands, reflecting international recognition of her work. She passed away on 25 January 1870, leaving a legacy as a pioneering woman in the fields of astronomy, navigation, and instrumentation.
