Janet McTeer, born on August 5, 1961, is an English actress with an extensive career on stage, in film, and on television. She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made her professional stage debut in 1984. She gained early recognition with a nomination for the Olivier Award for Best Newcomer in 1986 for her role in The Grace of Mary Traverse. McTeer earned the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress and a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for her performance in A Doll's House in 1997. She has also received nominations for her Broadway roles in Mary Stuart and Bernhardt/Hamlet. Her film work includes two Academy Award nominations, one for Best Actress for Tumbleweeds in 1999 and another for Best Supporting Actress for Albert Nobbs in 2011. Other notable films include Wuthering Heights, Carrington, Velvet Goldmine, Songcatcher, and The Menu. On television, she starred as the title character in The Governor and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for her portrayal of Clementine Churchill in the HBO film Into the Storm.
