About Jane Austen
Jane Austen was an English novelist born on December 16, 1775, and she died on July 18, 1817. She is known primarily for her six novels which implicitly interpret, critique, and comment on the English landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Austen's works often explore the dependence of women on marriage for social and economic security, serving as implicit critiques of the sensibility novels of the second half of the 18th century and representing a transition to 19th-century literary realism. Her use of social commentary, realism, wit, and irony has garnered acclaim from critics and scholars.
Austen wrote major novels before the age of 22, but her works were not published until she was 35. Her notable novels include Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Emma, which were published anonymously between 1811 and 1816. She also authored Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published after her death in 1817, and began a novel titled Sanditon, which remained unfinished at her death. In addition, Austen created juvenile writings, a short epistolary novel Lady Susan, and the unfinished The Watsons.
Since her death, Austen's novels have rarely been out of print and gained wide acclaim after their republication in 1833. Her work has inspired numerous critical essays and literary anthologies. Her novels have also been frequently adapted into films and television series, with notable adaptations including Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, and Persuasion, among others.
