Jamie Cooper, born on June 14, 1964, is an Australian painter and a former Australian rules footballer who played in the Victorian Football League. He was recruited from Surrey Hills, Victoria, and made his senior VFL debut with the Fitzroy Football Club in 1984. During his career, Cooper appeared in 26 games over four seasons, primarily serving as a fringe player. He is best known for his artistic work, particularly his large-scale historical 'dream scene' sporting portraits. These artworks depict star players from various eras interacting in cohesive scenes within a single location, such as a locker room or on a field. Cooper’s first commissioned paintings for the Australian Football League's Carlton Football Club celebrated its Team of the Century in 2001. Over the following decade, he created similar scenes for most AFL clubs and produced a mural to commemorate the leagues 150th anniversary of Australian rules football in 2008. The mural, titled The Game That Made Australia, showcases his ability to incorporate subtle references to club history and folklore. In 2008, he completed an uncommissioned dream scene of Major League Baseball’s Philadelphia Phillies, which was later purchased outright in 2011. His work has garnered international recognition, leading to commissions by several prominent European football clubs including Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Sheffield Wednesday, and Hull Kingston Rovers. Cooper’s detailed background elements often include thematic nods to the clubs' historical events and folklore, establishing him as a notable figure in the realm of sports-themed art.
