James Whittaker

James Whittaker was a religious leader and author associated with the Shaker sect in 18th century America. Born in Oldham, England, in 1751, he was a member of the artisan and merchant class and emigrated to colonial America with his relative Mother Ann Lee, who was a prominent figure within the sect. Whittaker was known for his powerful oratory skills that attracted many followers to the Shaker community. Following the death of Mother Ann Lee in 1784, Whittaker became the second leader of the Shakers. Under his leadership, the sect established communities in New England, including the construction of the meetinghouse at Mount Lebanon in 1785, which became a central site for Shaker activities from Maine to Kentucky. Whittaker's tenure was marked by extensive travel within the sect and physical hardships, including instances of physical abuse. Foreseeing his own death, he chose to pass away at the Enfield, Connecticut Shaker community in 1787. After his death, Joseph Meacham succeeded him as leader amidst a power struggle. In addition to his religious work, Whittaker was recognized as a speaker and author, contributing to the development and dissemination of Shaker teachings.
