James Cook was a British Royal Navy officer, explorer, and cartographer known for leading three significant voyages of exploration to the Pacific and Southern Oceans between 1768 and 1779. During these expeditions, he extensively mapped coastlines, islands, and geographic features, including the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand's main islands and the first European visit to the east coast of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands. Cook joined the British merchant navy as a teenager and enlisted in the Royal Navy in 1755, gaining combat experience during the Seven Years' War. His mapping of Newfoundland's coastline and astronomical observations in the 1760s earned him recognition from the Admiralty and the Royal Society, leading to his appointment as commander of HMS Endeavour. He was esteemed for his seamanship, patience, and perseverance, as well as his contributions to preventing scurvy among sailors, which earned him the Copley Gold Medal from the Royal Society.
