James Brien Comey Jr. is an American lawyer known for serving as the seventh director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 until his termination in May 2017. During his career, he held the positions of U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York from 2002 to 2003 and deputy attorney general from 2003 to 2005. After leaving the Department of Justice, Comey worked as a senior vice president and general counsel at Lockheed Martin and later as general counsel at Bridgewater Associates. He also served as a senior research scholar and Hertog fellow at Columbia Law School and was a member of the board of directors of HSBC Holdings until July 2013. Appointed by President Barack Obama, Comey oversaw the FBI's investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server during her tenure as Secretary of State. His handling of the investigation, including his public statements and the decision to reopen it ahead of the 2016 presidential election, generated significant controversy and scrutiny. Comey was dismissed by then-President Donald Trump in May 2017, with the Department of Justice citing mishandling of the Clinton investigation as the reason. His subsequent actions, including memos regarding private meetings with Trump, and his congressional testimony, were interpreted by some as evidence of obstruction of justice. Comey's conduct and memos were subject to investigations by the Office of the Inspector General, which found violations of policies but no evidence of sharing classified information.
