Sir Jacob William Rees-Mogg, born on 24 May 1969, is a British politician, businessman, and broadcaster. He served as the Member of Parliament for North East Somerset from 2010 to 2024 and is associated with the Conservative Party. Rees-Mogg held several significant government positions, including Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council from 2019 to 2022. He was also Minister of State for Brexit Opportunities and Government Efficiency in 2022, and served briefly as Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy in 2022. He was previously the chair of the European Research Group, a eurosceptic political organization, from 2018 to 2019. He is known for his socially conservative views and his alignment with traditionalist Tory factions, such as the Cornerstone Group. Rees-Mogg was born in Hammersmith, London, and received his education at Westminster Under School, Eton College, and Trinity College, Oxford, where he studied history and served as president of the Oxford University Conservative Association. His career includes work in finance, notably in the City of London and Hong Kong, before co-founding Somerset Capital Management LLP, a hedge fund business. He amassed considerable wealth, with estimates between £55 million and £150 million in 2016. Politically, he has been known as a conviction politician with traditionalist attitudes, often described as the 'Honourable Member for the 18th century.' After an unsuccessful run in the 1997 and 2001 general elections, he was elected in 2010 and re-elected in subsequent elections. Following his political career, he became a host and presenter for GB News in early 2023.
