Jacob Lawrence Frey, born on July 23, 1981, is an American politician and attorney who has served as the mayor of Minneapolis since 2018. He is a member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party. Prior to his mayoral tenure, Frey served on the Minneapolis City Council from 2014 to 2018. He was elected mayor of Minneapolis in 2017 and has been reelected in 2021 and 2025. Born and raised in Northern Virginia, Frey attended the College of William & Mary on a track and field scholarship, competing as a distance runner and running professionally, achieving recognition in prominent races and earning an athletic endorsement. After completing law school at Villanova University, he moved to Minneapolis, where he worked as an employment discrimination and civil rights lawyer before entering politics.
