Jack Roosevelt Robinson was an American professional baseball player renowned for breaking the color line in Major League Baseball. Born in Cairo, Georgia, and raised in Pasadena, California, Robinson was a talented athlete in multiple sports at Pasadena Junior College and the University of California, Los Angeles, with a particular reputation in football. He served in the United States Army during World War II, where he notably refused to sit at the back of a segregated bus, leading to a court-martial and subsequent honorable discharge. Robinson then played for the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro leagues before being signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers, where he became the first African American to play in the MLB in the modern era. His debut on April 15, 1947, marked the end of racial segregation in professional baseball. During his ten-year Major League career, Robinson was awarded the inaugural Rookie of the Year Award, was a six-time All-Star, and earned the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1949, the first Black player to do so. He participated in six World Series and contributed to the Dodgers’ 1955 championship victory. Robinson's character, nonviolent approach, and athletic talent challenged racial segregation and influenced broader civil rights efforts. He also became the first Black television analyst in MLB and was the first Black vice president of a major American corporation, Chock full o’Nuts. Additionally, he helped establish the Freedom National Bank in Harlem. Posthumously, Robinson received the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His legacy is commemorated by the retirement of his jersey number 42 across all MLB teams and the annual observance of Jackie Robinson Day.
