John Pierpont Morgan Sr. was an American financier and investment banker who played a dominant role in corporate finance on Wall Street during the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. As the head of the banking firm that became JPMorgan Chase & Co., he was instrumental in facilitating major industrial consolidations in the United States at the turn of the twentieth century. Morgan was involved in the formation of several prominent multinational corporations, including U.S. Steel, International Harvester, and General Electric. He and his partners also held controlling interests in numerous American businesses such as Aetna, Western Union, the Pullman Car Company, and 21 railroads. As a leading banker of the Progressive Era, Morgan contributed to the modernization and efficiency of the American economy. He is often regarded as one of America's greatest bankers. Morgan passed away in Rome, Italy, in 1913 at the age of 75, leaving behind a substantial fortune and a legacy of financial influence.
