Jo-Issa Rae Diop, professionally known as Issa Rae, is an American actress, writer, and producer. She first gained recognition through her work on the YouTube web series Awkward Black Girl, which ran from 2011 to 2013. Rae authored a memoir titled The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, published in 2015, which became a New York Times bestseller. She is notably the co-creator, co-writer, and star of the HBO comedy series Insecure, which aired from 2016 to 2021, earning her multiple nominations for Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy Awards.
