About Ignaz Semmelweis
Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis was a Hungarian medical doctor and scientist of German descent, recognized as an early pioneer of antiseptic procedures and often referred to as the 'saviour of mothers'. He made significant contributions to reducing postpartum infections, also known as puerperal fever or childbed fever, which was a common and often fatal bacterial infection following childbirth in the 19th century. Semmelweis demonstrated that the incidence of such infections could be drastically lowered by requiring healthcare workers in obstetrical clinics to disinfect their hands. In 1847, he proposed hand washing with chlorinated lime solutions at Vienna General Hospital’s First Obstetrical Clinic, where the mortality rate was significantly higher in doctors' wards compared to midwives' wards. Following the implementation of his hand hygiene measures, the maternal mortality rate dropped from 18 percent to less than 2 percent. He published his findings in 1861 in a book titled Etiology, Concept and Prophylaxis of Childbed Fever. Despite the effectiveness of his methods, Semmelweis's ideas conflicted with contemporary scientific and medical opinions and were widely rejected. His inability to provide a theoretical explanation for his findings, coupled with the discomfort of being asked to question established practices, led to mockery and opposition. In 1865, Semmelweis reportedly suffered a nervous breakdown and was committed to an asylum, where he was beaten by guards. He died two weeks later from a gangrenous wound on his hand, which may have been caused by the beating. His contributions gained recognition only after his death when Louis Pasteur confirmed germ theory, and Joseph Lister utilized hygienic practices in medicine.
