Ian Johnson: podcast appearances and interviews

Ian Johnson is a Canadian-born American journalist recognized for his extensive reporting on China and Germany. He writes regularly for publications including The New York Review of Books, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. Johnson’s work has earned numerous accolades, notably the Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for his coverage in The Wall Street Journal of the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China. His reporting from China has also been honored by the Overseas Press Club and the Society of Professional Journalists in the same year. In 2017, he received the Shorenstein Prize from Stanford University for his body of work covering Asia. Additionally, he was awarded the American Academy of Religion's prize for best in-depth news writing in 2019. Johnson's career included time in China, but in 2020, his journalistic visa was canceled amid escalating tensions between the United States and China over trade and the COVID-19 pandemic, leading him to leave China. He currently resides in New York and serves as a Stephen A. Schwarzman senior fellow for China studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. Johnson is also known by his Chinese name Zhang Yan.
