Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian and American actress and inventor, born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler. She initially pursued a film career in Czechoslovakia, gaining recognition for her role in the controversial film Ecstasy in 1933. After fleeing her first husband Friedrich Mandl, she moved secretly to Paris and later traveled to London, where she met Louis B. Mayer. He offered her a contract in Hollywood, leading to her becoming a successful film star. Lamarr's notable films include Algiers, Boom Town, White Cargo, and Samson and Delilah. She achieved significant recognition in the entertainment industry and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. Beyond her acting career, Lamarr co-invented a radio guidance system during World War II with composer George Antheil. This system employed spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to counteract radio jamming by Axis powers, aiming to provide secure, jam-resistant communication for Allied torpedoes. This concept, known as a secret communication system, laid the groundwork for technologies used in secure wireless communications today. Although the specific system was not operational during the war and the patent expired before widespread adoption, the principles of frequency hopping became foundational for spread spectrum communications. These principles are now integral to modern wireless technologies such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, which use similar methods to protect data from interception and interference.
