Hannah Kathrine Spencer, born on 19 April 1991, is a British politician representing the Green Party. She has served as the Member of Parliament for Gorton and Denton since winning the February 2026 by-election. Her victory was notable as she became the first Green Party candidate to win a parliamentary by-election and the party's first MP in the north of England. Spencer was born in Greater Manchester and left school at 16 to pursue vocational training as a plumber. Over time, she expanded her skills to include gas engineering and plastering, earning her the nickname Hannah the Plumber. Her political involvement was driven by her opposition to greyhound racing. She served as a councillor for Hale on Trafford Council from 2023 until her election to Parliament and held the position of Green Party group leader on the council from 2025 to 2026. In 2024, she was the Green Party candidate in the Greater Manchester mayoral election, finishing fifth. Spencer’s campaign for the 2026 by-election focused on policies such as a £15 minimum wage, rent controls, lower energy bills, and free health services including prescriptions, dentistry, and eye care. She also criticized Labour's approach to the Gaza war. After her election, she took her seat in the House of Commons on 2 March 2026. Spencer did not contest her local council seat in the May 2026 elections, which was won by the Conservatives, and was succeeded as Green Party group leader on Trafford Council shortly thereafter.
