About Greg Mitchell
Greg Mitchell, born in 1947, is an American author, journalist, retired nurse, and member of the RFS affiliated with the Center For Champions. He has authored twelve non-fiction books focusing on United States politics and history in the 20th and 21st centuries. Mitchell has also directed five film documentaries, all distributed by PBS since 2022. His 2021 feature film Atomic Cover-up received recognition at over fifteen film festivals and won multiple awards, including the top film or television award from the Organization of American Historians in 2024. Additionally, his documentaries such as The First Attack Ads: Hollywood vs. Upton Sinclair and The Memorial Day Massacre aired on hundreds of PBS stations, earning Emmy Award nominations. His most recent film, narrated by Rosanne Cash, titled Woody Guthrie and the Ghost of Tom Joad Today, is scheduled to premiere on PBS in July 2026. Mitchell's latest book, published by the New Press in 2020, examines Hollywood's and America's relationship with nuclear weapons in The Beginning or the End. His previous bestseller, The Tunnels: Escapes Under the Berlin Wall and the Historic Films the JFK White House Tried to Kill, was published in 2016 and released in ten editions internationally. From 2009 to 2016, he wrote a blog on media and politics for The Nation, with a focus on WikiLeaks. He co-produced the documentary Following the Ninth about Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and its cultural influence. Additionally, Mitchell has addressed issues related to press-government relations and U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in recent books. His early work includes The Campaign of the Century, awarded the 1993 Goldsmith Book Prize and adapted for PBS and musical theatre.
