Gráinne O'Malley, also known as Gráinne Mhaol or the Pirate Queen, was the head of the Ó Máille dynasty in western Ireland during the sixteenth century. She became the active leader of her land and sea lordship following her father's death, despite having a brother. Her marriage to Dónal an Chogaidh Ó Flaithbheartaigh enhanced her wealth and influence; she reportedly owned around 1,000 cattle and horses. In 1593, her sons and half-brother were captured by Sir Richard Bingham, the English governor of Connacht. O'Malley sailed to England to petition for their release and formally presented her request to Queen Elizabeth I at Greenwich Palace. Her life is primarily documented through English sources, such as the eighteen Articles of Interrogatory issued on behalf of Elizabeth I, as she is not mentioned in Irish annals. She is also referenced in the English State Papers and other documents. In Irish folklore and popular culture, she is regularly identified by her Gaelic name and is widely recognized for her leadership and maritime prowess. Her contemporary English name varies in historical records, including forms like Gráinne O'Maly and Graney O'Mally. Despite the limited Irish documentary evidence, her prominence as a notable figure in sixteenth-century Irish history endures, and she is frequently referred to as 'The Pirate Queen'.
