Frederick Wiseman: podcast appearances and interviews

Frederick Wiseman was an American filmmaker, documentarian, theater director, editor, and actor known for his work examining American institutions. His notable documentaries include Titicut Follies, Hospital, Welfare, and In Jackson Heights, among others. His films are recognized for their dramatic structure despite a lack of traditional narrative devices, often addressing social and economic issues in the United States. Wiseman’s filmography spans decades and covers a wide range of topics, including high schools, law and order, ballet, and public institutions such as the New York Public Library. In addition to his documentary work, he directed two narrative films, La Dernière Lettre and A Couple, and also engaged in stage productions and acting. His contributions to cinema earned him widespread recognition, including an Academy Honorary Award in 2016. The New York Times referred to him in 2017 as one of the most important and original filmmakers working at that time. That same year, he received the Critics' Choice Documentary Award for Best Director for Ex Libris: The New York Public Library. Wiseman announced his retirement in 2025 and passed away on February 16, 2026.
