Francis Ford Coppola is an American filmmaker born on April 7, 1939. Recognized as a leading figure of the New Hollywood movement, he is considered one of the most influential directors in the history of cinema. Coppola has received numerous awards including five Academy Awards, a BAFTA Award, three Golden Globe Awards, and two Palmes d'Or. His achievements also include nominations for two Emmy Awards and a Grammy Award, along with honors such as the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award in 2010, the Kennedy Center Honors in 2024, and the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2025. Four of his films have been inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. Coppola made his debut as a director with Dementia 13 in 1963. He went on to direct films such as You're a Big Boy Now, Finian's Rainbow, and The Rain People. After co-writing the screenplay for Patton, which earned him an Academy Award, he gained further acclaim with The Godfather trilogy, which earned multiple Oscars and revolutionized the gangster genre. His 1974 film The Conversation received the Palme d'Or, as did Apocalypse Now in 1979, making him one of only ten filmmakers to win the award twice. His filmography includes The Outsiders, Rumble Fish, The Cotton Club, Peggy Sue Got Married, and Bram Stoker's Dracula. Coppola has also worked as a producer and transitioned into independent filmmaking in later years. His family includes notable figures in the film industry, such as his sister Talia Shire, his daughter Sofia Coppola, his son Roman Coppola, and nephews Jason Schwartzman and Nicolas Cage. Currently residing in Napa, California, Coppola has also been active as a vintner.
