Florence Williams

Florence Williams is an American journalist and nonfiction author whose work concentrates on the environment, health, and science. She is a contributing editor at Outside magazine and writes freelance articles for publications including National Geographic, the New York Times, the New York Review of Books, Slate, Mother Jones, High Country News, and others. Williams's first book, Breasts: A Natural and Unnatural History, was awarded the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in science and technology and the 2013 Audie Award in general nonfiction. It was also named a notable book of 2012 by The New York Times. Her second book, The Nature Fix, explores the relationship between the brain and nature; it received acclaim with Edward O. Wilson describing it as a well-written and enjoyable exposition supported by scientific evidence. Her third book, Heartbreak, investigates her personal experience with divorce and the scientific understanding of emotional stress. Williams has held a Scripps Fellowship at the Center of Environmental Journalism at the University of Colorado and is a fellow at the Center for Humans and Nature. She is also a visiting scholar at George Washington University and serves on the board of High Country News. Her work has garnered multiple awards, including six magazine awards from the American Society of Journalists and Authors and the John Hersey Prize at Yale. Williams is also recognized for her contributions as a writer and host of two Audible Originals series, Breasts Unbound and The Three-Day Effect, which have won Gracie Awards. She has appeared locally on Fresh Air with Terry Gross and has been nominated for a Webby Award. She resides in Washington, D.C.
