Richardson has a background in professional sports, having been a wide receiver in the National Football League. He played scholastic football at Novato High School in the North Bay region and initially attended Monterey Peninsula College before transferring to San Jose State University. During his college career, Richardson was recognized as a second-team All-American by the Newspaper Enterprise Association as a senior. He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the second round of the 1984 NFL draft and played in 30 games, starting two of them, with his first game occurring in 1985.
