Eric Michael Garcetti is an American politician and diplomat who served as the United States ambassador to India from 2023 to 2025. He was the 42nd mayor of Los Angeles, holding office from 2013 until 2022. Garcetti was elected as mayor in 2013 and was re-elected in 2017. Prior to his tenure as mayor, he served as a member of the Los Angeles City Council and was the city's first elected Jewish mayor. He also became the second consecutive Mexican-American mayor of Los Angeles. Garcetti was notably the youngest mayor in over a century at the age of 42 when he took office. During his career in local government, he served as City Council president from 2006 to 2012. As a member of the Democratic Party, Garcetti's career includes his appointment as U.S. ambassador to India, a role he was confirmed for by the Senate on March 15, 2023, after a nomination process that followed a previous unsuccessful nomination.
