She was married to Jim Elliot, who was killed in 1956 while attempting to make missionary contact with the Auca people of eastern Ecuador. Following her husband's death, she spent two years as a missionary among the tribe members who had killed him. After living in South America for many years, Elliot returned to the United States where she authored over 20 books. She became a prominent speaker and toured extensively into her seventies, sharing her experiences and insights.
