Elaine Pagels, born February 13, 1943, is an American historian of religion and the Harrington Spear Paine Professor of Religion Emeritus at Princeton University. Her academic work focuses on early Christianity and Gnosticism, and she has conducted extensive research in these areas. Pagels is well known for her bestselling book The Gnostic Gospels, published in 1979, which explores the divisions within the early Christian church and examines the historical treatment of women throughout Jewish and Christian history. Her work has received significant recognition; The Gnostic Gospels was named by Modern Library as one of the 100 best nonfiction books of the twentieth century, ranking at number 72.
