Edmund Walter Fitton-Brown, born on 5 October 1962, is a former British diplomat and a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. His work primarily focuses on issues related to the Arabian peninsula, global terrorism, and extremist groups including ISIS, al-Qaeda, and the Muslim Brotherhood. He joined Her Majesty's Diplomatic Service in 1984 after studying history at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and has held postings in countries such as Finland, Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Italy, and the United Arab Emirates. Between 1991 and 2003, he served as First Secretary and later as Counsellor in various locations including Cairo and Rome. From February 2015 to February 2017, he was the British Ambassador to Yemen. In 2018, he joined the United Nations and served for five years as the Coordinator of the United Nations Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team. In this role, he was responsible for monitoring individuals, groups, and entities associated with Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, Al-Qaida, the Taliban, and related organizations. In March 2026, he publicly expressed criticism of the British Government's foreign policy, highlighting concerns about Islamist influence within the Civil Service and the distortion of alliances and adversaries.
