Eddie Asner was an American actor born on November 15, 1929, and he passed away on August 29, 2021. He is best known for his portrayal of Lou Grant on both the sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spin-off drama Lou Grant. His performances in these roles earned him seven Primetime Emmy Awards, the most of any male performer, including three supporting Actor Emmy awards for comedy and two for drama, as well as awards for his work in the miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man and Roots. Asner’s extensive acting career included roles in numerous films such as El Dorado, They Call Me Mister Tibbs!, Fort Apache The Bronx, JFK, and Too Big to Fail. He also played Santa Claus in several films and provided the voice of Carl Fredricksen in the Pixar animated film Up. In addition to his film work, Asner starred in the ABC sitcom Thunder Alley and Michael: Every Day. His television appearances spanned a broad range of series including The Practice, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, The Good Wife, Cobra Kai, Briarpatch, Working Class, and Dead to Me. He lent his voice to characters in animated series such as J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Hudson in Gargoyles, and Ed Wuncler Sr. in The Boondocks.
